Osseous surgery is one way that our dentists, Dr. Homa H. Zadeh and associates can improve the healthy and aesthetic value of your smile. The process is sometimes referred to as a gingivectomy or more commonly as pocket reduction surgery. Its purpose is to give the dentist access to the root of a tooth. Osseous surgery may be used to:
- Prevent the loss of bone tissue
- Help make brushing and flossing more effective
- Treat an infection or the spread of bacteria
- Improve your appearance
After numbing the area around the tooth, the dentist will remove the gum tissue from the affected area. Then the roots will be carefully cleaned to remove plaque, tartar and in some instances the calculus that has built up on the root. Then, the bone around the teeth will be reshaped to fit your tooth more effectively and restore it to its proper contours. If bone loss has occurred, the dentist may use this time to place a bone graft in the area. The gums will then be sutured back in place and may be dressed to facilitate healing. There may be some residual bleeding and swelling after your visit and this is normal. You should contact our office is the either of these problems get worse or do not go away on their own. In the meantime, you can use an ice or cold pack to deal with the swelling.
