Changes in your body throughout life result in hormonal changes which can create swelling, tenderness and redness.
During puberty an increased production of hormones can make gums redden swell and feel irritated.
As adulthood women can experience symptoms similar to gum disease, just before menstruation. Those symptoms can include the usual symptoms of gum disease along with canker sores and swollen salivary glands. These symptoms disappear relatively quickly. Pregnancy can cause your gums to swell and feel tender. You may experience what are known as “pregnancy tumors which are lumps that form on your gums. These lumps are harmless and easy to remove. Swollen and bleeding gums can also be a side effect of oral contraceptives. You should always let our team know if you are pregnant or think you might be, and please keep our office up to date about any medications you are taking, including contraceptives.
During menopause you may experience dry mouth, pain or discomfort in your gums or an unpleasant taste in your mouth. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms please make an appointment to see Dr. Zadeh.
